7 tell-tale signs of joint pain in dogs

Joint pain is one of the most common problems I see in the dogs I treat at my veterinary clinic, and it can appear in some animals even at a young age. However, the signs of joint pain can be difficult to see. As a loving pet parent, knowing what to look for is important. Here are 7 signs your furry little one is suffering from joint pain.

1. Reluctance to move

When dogs develop joint problems, they can show a noticeable decrease in activity. They are less likely to climb up and down stairs, jump on the couch, or jump in the car.

2. Limp

If your dog has difficulty moving his joints, it can cause him to limp. The limp can be more noticeable when your dog gets up for the first time after a period of rest and slacks off a little once he gets the hang of moving.

3. Spine problems

Joint inflammation can affect your dog’s spine, causing a sore throat, bent back, or increased frailty in the hind legs. Spinal problems can even lead to an unnatural posture when your dog is walking.

4. Drowsiness

Dogs with joint pain spend much of the day resting or sleeping. Walks can get shorter, and this escalation in lethargy can lead to weight gain, which in turn increases pressure on his joints.

5. Irritability and aggression

Joint pain can have a significant impact on your dog’s general mood. It can bite you if the affected joints are touched. The aggression is a direct response to the pain stimulation.

6. Loss of appetite and depression

Behavioral changes appear to be abundant in pets with joint pain. Inactivity can lead to loss of appetite and depression. You may find that your dog’s typically playful self seems to be overwhelmed with despair.

7. Licking, chewing, or biting

Does your dog keep licking his paw or biting his leg? These could be signs of possible discomfort in these joints. Dogs will alert you to affected areas in response to the pain that is bothering them.
