Turkey is great as it is very low in fat and easy to digest. This makes them useful for dogs that are allergic to the common sources of protein – lamb, beef, and chicken. Turkey is also convenient as it is readily available.

Homemade dog nibbling

Quickly create crunchy dog ​​nibbles that your dog will love. With healthy ingredients and complete control, you can feed a healthy, balanced diet with delicious toppers that are cheaper than commercial dry dog ​​food.

ingredients

  • 1 cup and 1 tablespoon (200 g) brown rice
  • ½ cup (100 g) lentils
  • 5 cups (1¼ liters) of water
  • 3 medium-sized carrots (200 g), peeled and chopped
  • 1 medium sweet potato (200 g), scrubbed and chopped
  • 1 apple, peeled, cored and chopped, or ½ cup (100 g) unsweetened applesauce
  • ¾ cup (100 g) steel cut oats
  • 1¼ tablespoons of finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 2 small sprigs of fresh rosemary, finely chopped
  • 2¼ cups (500 g) ground turkey, approximately 18 ounces
  • ¼ cup (50 ml) olive, sunflower, or rapeseed oil, plus additional fatty oil

Directions

1. Put rice and lentils in a saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and cook for 20 minutes.

2. Once the rice and lentils are cooked, add the chopped carrots, sweet potato and apple to the saucepan. Stir in oats and chopped herbs and simmer gently for another 20 minutes. Add an extra cup of water if the mixture is too dry. Preheat the oven to 180 ° C.

3. In the meantime, fry the ground turkey in a separate pan. You need to keep stirring it as it cooks to prevent it from sticking to the pan as it is very low in fat. It takes about 10 minutes to cook through.

4. Put half of the cooked vegetable and cereal mixture in a food processor with half of the cooked turkey, add half of the oil and legume until the mixture resembles a thick puree.

5. Grease 2 baking trays and spread the mixture on one of the trays so that it is about 5 mm thick. The mixture spreads out easily, so leave some space for it. It is important that the mixture is not too thick as this will prevent the dog nibble from cooking through.

6. Repeat this process as described above with the second baking sheet and the remaining ingredients.

7. Place both baking sheets in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes. Turn the dog dumpling over to dry it out and cook for another 30 to 45 minutes. You should have two very large cookies. Make sure the brittle is cooked through completely, as damp parts will go moldy after a few days. If it’s not completely dry, leave it in the oven for another 20 minutes.

8. Reduce the oven temperature to 160 ° C. Take the “kibble cookies” out of the oven, cool them down slightly and cut them into small pieces. Place the pieces back on the baking sheets and bake for an additional hour or until the nibbles are completely dry (but not burned).

Take the snack out of the oven and let it cool completely.

Note: The finished dog snack food should resemble pieces of broken flatbread. It is kept in the refrigerator for 10 days.
